Hopi Nation Tourism Development Plan
The Hopi Tribe has extensive studies and plans for developing well-managed cultural tourism; unfortunately, they have never been implemented. Grand Canyon Trust organized a coalition of resource experts, including the Sedona Eco-Tourism Institute and Northern Arizona School of Hospitality. We conducted a 2-day strategic planning session for Hopi tribal leadership and tourism industry partners, resulting in a comprehensive strategy to develop tourism on the Hopi Nation.
Little Colorado River Park
The Grand Canyon Trust was engaged by the Cameron Arts and Crafts Association to help redevelop an older park along the Little Colorado River. The site is located near the east entrance of Grand Canyon National Park. Over 3 years, we worked with the community to:
- Develop a master plan using volunteer architect Jesse Stemler.
- Rebuild a 1-mile trail and repair picnic areas and signs in partnership with the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department and Grand Canyon Trust Volunteer Program.
- Implement major elements of a program to establish an interpretive park that offers education on the abundance of and uses for traditional Navajo plants that grow in the area. We worked with volunteer photographers and a local herbal expert to interpret and develop signage that engages visitors.
