Grand Canyon Trust has made great progress on renewable energy projects on Navajo and Hopi lands.

We have…

  • Initiated predevelopment activity for wind-energy projects at Big Boquillas Ranch by providing advice and establishing an asset management company.
  • Helped the Shonto Chapter launch a renewable energy business with management, financing, and component provider agreements.

  • Created the Arizona Sustainable Growth Fund, a funding mechanism resulting from our successful lawsuit against Tucson Electric Power, to be used for clean-energy projects. These funds match 75 percent of the cost of individual solar systems being installed to provide power to many Hopi and Navajo families.
  • Helped establish North Leupp Family Farms as a viable green enterprise with capable management, a board, 2-year grant funding, irrigation infrastructure, and assistance from our Volunteer program.

  • Guided the Hopi Tribe and Foresight Wind Energy through the predevelopment work on the 60-megawatt Sunshine wind farm.
