Utility-scale renewable energy projects at Grey Mountain, Big Boquillas Ranches, and Shonto

In 2006, the Grand Canyon Trust approached Navajo leadership about a potential wind-energy project at the Aubrey Cliffs. This collaboration helped educate the Navajo Nation, wind developers, and us about how to overcome the challenges of making a utility-scale project operational. It required creating a predevelopment joint venture between Foresight Energy and the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA). Next, we educated the Navajo Nation Council’s Natural Resource Committee, President, Vice President, and other executives about the challenges of entering into a multi-million dollar project within the established tribal government structure. We also discussed how other tribes — especially the Southern Ute — have addressed these challenges.

Working with the Navajo Nation Natural Resources Department, we established an asset management company entitled Narbona Capital Corp. This has resulted in the current predevelopment activity at Grey Mountain and Big Boquillas Ranches. Most recently, the Navajo Nation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Citizens Wind Energy to develop the Grey Mountain Wind Project. Citizens Wind is also engaged in our work with Shonto.
