Our goals for the Colorado Plateau Intertribal Gatherings
The Colorado Plateau Intertribal Conversations group has established itself as a strong, regional voice focused on supporting tribal projects and issues. Its overarching goal is to ensure the conservation of natural and cultural resources while empowering young leaders to protect water, health, sacred sites, and language and culture.
The central goals of the group are:
- Ensuring that native people and tribal nations revitalize their roles as tribal people by reconnecting with the land
- Accepting responsibility as stewards of the land
- Bridging the gap between tribal elders and youth
- Enhancing their relationship with respect, as the elders are the keepers of the land
Through the Gathering process, participants have identified the following intermediate goals for 2012:
- Continue working to build a strong foundation for a vibrant, regional intertribal organization to effectively address conservation initiatives across the Colorado Plateau
- Ensure that key conservation projects in the areas of water, health, sacred sites, and language and culture make major strides in achieving their goals with assistance from the Gathering process
- Ensure that specific landscape protection projects are developed to drive both large and small- scale conservation work
- Encourage the involvement of young leaders in the Gathering process, who will take responsibility for youth initiative projects with the participating tribes
