Now is our chance to protect Picture Canyon, one of Flagstaff’s most significant treasures.
The state land department is holding a hearing February 14 at Flagstaff City Hall at 10 a.m. to help them decide whether to reclassify as suitable for conservation purposes the state land section where Picture Canyon is located. This reclassification will make Picture Canyon eligible for Growing Smarter funds tohelp pay for city acquisition and permanent protection.
Picture Canyon got its name from the dozens of petroglyphs of archers, turtles, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, water birds and geometric designs that were made by the northern Sinagua who farmed and lived there between 1,000 and 1,200 A.D. Picture Canyon was initially recognized for its open space and resource values in 1998 when the Flagstaff Open Space and Greenways Plan identified it as one of the first priority areas for retention located on state trust lands.
