Ethan Aumack - Director of Restoration Programs
Background Information:
Managed several programs for the Trust during his first stint in 1997-2001
Formerly a restoration ecologist for The Nature Conservancy
Served as collaborator liaison for NAU’s Forest Ecosystem Restoration Analysis project
Education:
B.A. in Biology from Swarthmore College and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from
Northern Arizona University
Selected Career Highlights:
The Nature Conservancy work centered on restoration of fire to fire-adapted grasslands, conservation of
rare, native plants and animals and control of non-native plants
His work with ForestERA at NAU identified mechanisms for using state-of-the-art Geographic
Information System (GIS) based forest restoration tools in landscape scale forest restoration planning
Current job description:
Ethan is Director of Restoration programs where he focuses on efforts to initiate or accelerate the
recovery of natural landscapes and processes, and native plants and animals
Responsibilities:
Ensure restoration projects are scientifically rigorous, ecologically appropriate, and viable from a social
and political perspective
Advocate for ecologically appropriate forest restoration practices through the Greater Flagstaff Forests
Partnership
Develop and implement science-based, landscape scale forest restoration strategies for northern Arizona
Convene and manage a Science Advisory Council to help manage and guide restoration activities on the
Kane and Two-Mile Ranches
Conduct an ecological assessment to determine baseline conditions, appropriate restoration-based
management priorities and strategies for the ranches
Implement restoration projects and conduct restoration-based management activities on the ranches
