About our Energy Development Program...
The Grand Canyon Trust created its energy development program in 2008 in response to increased threats to air, water and lands resources, and human health in southern Utah’s national parks, public lands and rural communities. Beginning in 2003, the Trust participated in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process as new resource management plans were being written for Utah’s BLM lands. These plans, released and implemented in 2008, led to the controversial 360,000-acre, oil-and-gas-lease sale on lands adjacent to Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef National Parks, Dinosaur National Monument, and many other wilderness-quality lands.
We are currently involved in litigation seeking improvement of new BLM resource management plans for oil and gas development, travel management, climate, and air-quality issues.
