Navajo group spells out alternatives to Desert Rock Power Plant

Diné Citizens Against Ruining our Environment (Diné CARE) said that in light of growing concern over greenhouse gases and global warming, that new electricity generation should come from a mix of solar, wind and natural gas, instead of from a new coal-fired power plant.

They released a report late last week, which contains more than 160 pages and includes maps, pie charts and graphs showing how renewable energy projects would compare to Desert Rock.

The report also provides a comprehensive look at how the tribe's Diné, Fundamental
Law — based on centuries of customary, traditional, natural and common law — can be applied to current issues such as resource management and energy development.

Diné CARE and other conservation- minded organizations have argued that Desert Rock, which would be the third coal-fired plant in the Four Corners region, would harm the environment and put the health of residents, particularly children and the elderly, at risk.

Attached is a report entitled "Energy and Economic Alternatives to the Desert Rock Energy Project (click here) ".  It was prepared by Ecos Consulting of Durango at the request of Diné CARE.
