Grand Canyon Trust Sponsors Western Arizona Tourism Workshop

WESTERN ARIZONA COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM WORKSHOP

August 13th – 15th, 2007

Navajo Nation Quality Inn

PAGE, AZ

The Western Arizona Community-based Tourism Workshop will be held at the Navajo Nation Quality Inn in Page, Arizona, on August 13-15, 2007. The workshop is a result of Western Navajo and Hopi communities’ regional tourism meetings that began in early 2005.

Grand Canyon Trust and the Navajo Tourism Department are excited to offer this unique community-based tourism workshop for Navajo and Hopi community members.  The participants of the workshop will create a self-sustaining organization assuring tourism products developed at the tourism workshop can be implemented by the communities.  Participants will learn to identify and assess potential tourism opportunities in their community, create an inventory of community tourism assets, and be able to take these tourism development tools back to their communities, enabling them to create a regional marketing plan.

The workshop, based from a community-based tourism perspective, assures that local values and cultural sites are protected. It will be facilitated by Cynthia Messer, a tourism professional from the University of Minnesota.

The workshop will feature presentations by tourism professionals including Dawn Melvin, Arizona Office of Tourism; Cheryl Cothran, Northern Arizona University Hospitality Research & Resource Center; Kathie Knapp, Arizona Department of Transportation Arizona Scenic Byways; Effie Yazzie, Antelope Canyon Tribal Park; Diane Dearmore, Sedona Institute of Ecotourism; Jonathan Nez, Shonto Community Governance; Anson Arviso, ABC, Inc.; Tony Skrelunas, Grand Canyon Trust; Verginia Yazzie, Navajo Tourism Department and Belma Navakuku, Navakuku Consulting.

Special guests also include Hopi and Navajo entrepreneurs who are the core of tourism development.  Special guests are Harold Simpson, Simpson’s Trailhandler Tours; Art Batala, Hopi Artisan; Daniel Honahni, Moenkopi Developers Corporation, Inc.; and Chief Ray Tsosie, Antelope Slot Canyon Tours.  This unique hands-on workshop will provide all participants the required tools, skills, knowledge and strategies for community-based tourism development and planning processes.
