General Description
The Volunteer Coordinator (VC) will take primary responsibility for coordinating the Trust's volunteer conservationist program. Other responsibilities include recruitment, advertising, participation in the program's fundraising activities, developing contacts and relationships with a variety of organizations and individuals, and working with program managers as needed to promote program work to community members and coordinating logistics and field crew leaders.
Duties and Responsibilities
A. Coordinate Volunteer Program
The Volunteer Coordinator will work with other program staff and contacts throughout the community to identify volunteer opportunities across northern Arizona. The Trust’s volunteer program focuses primarily on the Kane and Two Mile ranches area north of the Grand Canyon and secondarily on local volunteer projects. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for creating and managing a budget for the volunteer program; training volunteers and other field crew leaders as well as coordinating trip logistics; leading trips in the field; managing equipment used in the field and data gathered by volunteers; and assisting other program staff in the use of this data. S/he will serve as a spokesperson for the program within the community when appropriate.
B. Assist in Project Design, Management and Implementation
The S/he will work with the director and program officers to design, develop and evaluate conservation projects and will assist in managing relations with contractors, partners, and other organizations.
C. Assist in Public Affairs/Communications
The VC will undertake specific assignments to maintain an open flow of communications with all relevant partners and colleagues, provide accurate and timely information about the Trust's work, and maintain the highest level of professionalism in the Trust's relationships with all sectors.
Job requirements
1. Communication ability: Excellent writing and oral communication skills are required.
2. Volunteer coordination ability: Demonstrated ability to train and coordinate projects and people, from
the office, and in the field.
3. Research and analytical ability: Experience conducting professional research and analysis of specific
conservation issues and challenges. Aptitude for innovation and creative thinking that helps to meet
the overall mission of the organization and specific goals of the Kane and Two Mile Ranch project.
4. Interpersonal skills: Ability to work constructively with all GCT staff, especially Program Officers, as
well as with a wide variety of colleagues, members, volunteers, the general public, board members and
public officials.
5. Time management skills: Ability to keep a number of activities moving forward simultaneously is
necessary.
6. Some knowledge of strategic issues related to conservation.
7. Energy, enthusiasm and willingness to do the work necessary, including on weekends and evenings, to
get the job done. Schedule flexibility during the field season (late spring through early fall) is required.
8. B.A/B.S. degree in relevant field and at least 2 years experience working in conservation or related field
preferred.
9. Experience planning events, and working with people of mixed backgrounds.
10. Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Training or a more advanced medical training preferred.
11. Experience and confidence living and working in primitive outdoor settings is a must.
