SUMMER INTERN POSITION WITH GRAND CANYON TRUST

Field Monitoring in Southern Utah on

Dixie, Fishlake, and Manti-La Sal National Forests

 

Intern Position

 

              Grand Canyon Trust (GCT) is seeking an intern for June 18-August 13, 2008 who is familiar with ecology, GIS, and quantitative field work. 

 

The intern will work in the field along with Dr. Mary O’Brien (Southern Utah Forests Project Manager, Grand Canyon Trust), and/or Season Martin (Grand Canyon Trust intern and Whitman College graduate) to monitor key variables on southern Utah’s three national Forests: Dixie, Fishlake, and Manti-La Sal.  Tasks will include:

    • Rapid quantified assessment of aspen stand structure in diverse allotments
    • Rapid quantified assessment of  aspen, cottonwood, and willow browse in diverse allotments
    • Photographic and quantified documentation of  riparian and upland conditions within selected livestock allotments
    • Mapping of boundaries of potential reference areas (“gold standards”) for springs, meadows, and ponderosa pine stands.
    • Assistance with springs identification and mapping on the three Forests
    • Organizing of volunteers for specific field work days
    • Documentation of beaver activity in selected streams/watersheds

 

The paid ($4,160) position is for 8 weeks, 5 days a week in the field with a second intern and/or Dr. Mary O’Brien. Allowances for vehicle mileage and food during field work will be provided.

 

Desired Intern Qualifications

  • Class work in biology, ecology
  • Experience in quantitative biological field work
  • Field work using GPS; class work with GIS
  • Experience with camping and  hiking in steep and remote areas
  • Skills in compiling and presenting data, and writing reports based on scientific data
  • Demonstrated accountability with independent work
  • Access to a field-capable vehicle, digital camera, GPS unit (desired; not required)
  • Access to computer with GIS capabilities (desired)
