The Grand Canyon Trust has long been a critic of uranium mining around the Grand Canyon, especially the Pinyon Plain Mine. Those who oppose the mine have a right to protest under the First Amendment, and we fully support anyone who chooses to lawfully exercise that right. However, our organization doesn’t sponsor, promote, or engage in civil disobedience or support acts of protest unless they are law-abiding.
We’ve seen and heard reports that, during a rally on May 17, 2026, an Energy Fuels uranium haul truck, after being stopped on Highway 64 near the Pinyon Plain Mine, south of Grand Canyon National Park, was damaged and defaced. We did not organize, sponsor, promote, or participate in the rally, and because we were not present, we cannot speak firsthand about what happened. But the reports describe property damage and intimidating actions directed at an Energy Fuels’ truck driver that we do not condone.
We also do not condone the risks that the Pinyon Plain Mine poses to the Grand Canyon region and the communities between the mine and Energy Fuels’ mill near White Mesa, Utah. We will continue to advocate for the protection of the Grand Canyon region and to support communities along the haul route, including their right to peacefully protest.
