Lisa Winters, our Citizen Science Americorps Volunteer Coordinator, visits Ms. Wertz's 6th grade classroom at Sinagua Middle School every month as part of Flagstaff's Scientists in the Classroom program. They talk about different issues across the Colorado Plateau and recently wrote letters to outgoing Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell asking her to protect the Grand Canyon from uranium mining.
"Kids have a way of showing us what's important, and these letters from 6th graders remind us what's at stake," said Winters.

...the uranium is near springs and nature and it’s going to affect the wildlife and animals. – Elise H.
This is important to me because if you let uranium mining go on, then our water will be polluted and we won't be able to drink water. —Dreiiden
I am writing to ask you to stop digging up or land and damaging our land. —Lakeila E.
