Join freelance writer and journalist Heather Hansman on Zoom to discuss her book “Fierce Country.”

What does it take to inspire generations of people to love and protect wild places?

In “Fierce Country: The Untold Story of Three Woman Who Ignited America’s Love for the Wild,” Hansman brings to life three remarkable women whose courage, vision, and adventerous spirits helped shape America’s relationship with the outdoors — including legendary Grand Canyon river runner Georgie White.

White introduced generations of people to the Colorado River’s breathtaking beauty and power. Through her extraordinary life, Hansman considers how our connections to places like the Grand Canyon can inspire us to care for and protect them, and how the stories of these women continue to influence conservation and recreation today.

Join Hansman, along with Grand Canyon Trust members and volunteers, on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026 for a lively conservation about “Fierce Country.”

Plus, all attendees will have a chance to win one of three copies of “Fierce Country.”

Praise for “Fierce Country”

“Heather Hansman’s questing spirit binds together three vivid portraits of the women who sparked a nation’s obsession with skiing, whitewater river rafting, and homesteading. Long-neglected heroines of outdoor adventure leap from the pages of Fierce Country. Profound and passionate, this book is a hymn to the power of wild nature and an homage to those who have gone before.”
― Melissa L. Sevigny, author of “Brave the Wild River”

“A nuanced and vivid portrait of pioneering outdoorswomen.”
