Virtual Author Talk with Stephen Trimble

December 9, 2026

Join writer and photographer Stephen Trimble on Zoom to discuss his book “The Sagebrush Ocean: A Natural History of the Great Basin”

In the 35th anniversary edition of “The Sagebrush Ocean: A Natural History of the Great Basin,” writer and photographer Stephen Trimble revisits the desert that first drew him beyond his Colorado Plateau home turf — adding recent photographs and a fresh look at a landscape in transition. This newly updated edition examines the ecology, spirit, and evolving story of the Great Basin Desert’s sun-struck playas, salt flats, rugged canyons, and wind-swept tundra.

If you have recreated in the Colorado Plateau’s canyon country, you’ll find much that feels familiar in these pages — from the pinyon-juniper woodlands that blanket both regions to the public lands debates over how best to care for them.

Join us December 9 for an afternoon chat with Trimble, who will discuss what’s at stake for the plants, animals, and people who call these high deserts home — and where he finds hope.

Plus, all attendees will have a chance to win one of two copies of “The Sagebrush Ocean.”

Praise for “The Sagebrush Ocean”

“In ‘Sagebrush Ocean,’ Stephen Trimble … gently calls attention to the changes, subtle and vast, in the Great Basin amid climate change and development, while rejoicing in the incomparable beauty of this high cold desert. A must-read for desert lovers in the Anthropocene.”
― Morgan Sjogren, author of “Path of Light: A Walk Through Colliding Legacies of Glen Canyon”

“In this meticulously revised and updated edition of his masterful book, Stephen Trimble reintroduces us to the natural wonders of the largest, highest, coldest, least known desert in the United States … In its expert braiding of accurate, up-to-date science, stunning photographs, and lyrical prose, ‘The Sagebrush Ocean’ ranks among the most expansive, graceful, and inspired natural histories of a western landscape ever written.”
― Michael P. Branch, author of Raising Wild and On the Trail of the Jackalope
