In December 2023, Energy Fuels Resources announced it had begun mining uranium at Canyon Mine (renamed Pinyon Plain Mine) for the first time in the mine's nearly 40-year history.
Please let the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Environmental Justice and the U.S. Forest Service, which manages the public land the mine occupies near the Grand Canyon, know that you oppose this mine.
Some points you might include in your comments:
- The mine threatens the Havasupai Tribe's sacred mountain, Red Butte
- The mine threatens precious groundwater in the Grand Canyon region, including the deep Redwall-Muav Aquifer, which feeds seeps and springs in the Grand Canyon that flow into the Colorado River
- Radioactive contamination from the mine poses a danger to wildlife and the surrounding environment
- The mine mists water contaminated with uranium and arsenic into the air, and it blows into the surrounding national monument
- Radioactive dust can blow from the ore pile into the surrounding national monument
- Ore from the mine will be sent to the White Mesa Mill, near the Ute Mountain Ute community of White Mesa, for processing
