The Grand Canyon Trust’s Native America program already has accomplished a lot.
We have helped...
- The Navajo Nation’s Shonto Chapter achieve self-sufficiency by developing a strategic template to guide future development. In just 3 years, substantial progress has been made in implementing the plan.
- Transition the Navajo economy into one that is sustainable by playing a senior advisory role in the Navajo Green Energy Commission.
- The North Leupp Family Farm become a big success by re-establishing the board of directors, hiring and training a manager, upgrading irrigation infrastructure, developing a strategic plan, and initiating a series training workshops.
- The Hopi and Navajo communities diversify their economies in light of the Black Mesa Mine closure. Our work focused on community-based economic development, economic renewal projects, land-use planning, and innovative business ventures.
- The Hopi Tribe plan and secure funding for a sustainable marketplace at Sipaulovi Village. We also helped create a Hopi Nation Tourism Development Plan by organizing a coalition of resource experts and conducting a 2-day strategic session.
- The Navajo Parks and Recreation Department develop a first-class hotel at Monument Valley in 2004. Our work included updating the feasibility analysis, helping find a project manager, and providing advice on financing and environmentally sound construction methods. The 90-room hotel was completed in 2008. The Navajo Nation owns 50 percent of the complex and the project provides tax/lease revenues and jobs.
- Successfully redevelop an older park along the Little Colorado River over a 3-year period.
