We are working to control invasive species along the Colorado River corridor.

The Grand Canyon Trust has been an integral partner with the Tamarisk Coalition and the South East Utah Tamarisk Partnership (SEUTP). SEUTP’s accomplishments include:

  • Creating a regional strategic management plan that includes maps of the river segments.
  • Planning, and seeking funding for, high-priority projects.
  • Completing large-scale removal projects (300 acres) initiated by the BLM and augmented by SEUTP members, along with other projects.
  • Acquiring funding and providing plant materials for revegetating BLM sites.
  • Monitoring treatments and collecting data monthly.

Eleanor Bliss leads this project and represents Grand Canyon Trust on SEUTP. She helped prepare SEUTP’s management plan and works with the Utah delegation to secure appropriations for Public Law 109-320, the Salt Cedar and Russian Olive Control Demonstration Act. Eleanor is researching ways to transform tamarisk biomass into useful products that could benefit local businesses.
