Bears Ears Needs You!

Tim Peterson by Tim Peterson, Utah Wildlands Director

Summer is in full swing at Bears Ears, and a major announcement made this afternoon could signal that the permanent protection of America’s most significant cultural landscape is as sure to arrive as the soaking four corners monsoon rains.

This is the moment we have been waiting for. Obama administration officials want to hear from you—in person—about Bears Ears.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and other decision makers are holding a public listening session on Saturday, July 16 in Bluff, Utah to gather public input on the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition’s proposed Bears Ears National Monument. Please don’t miss this opportunity; it may be the most important step you can take to help protect Bears Ears.

Event details:

Saturday, July 16 at 1 pm

Bluff Community Center, 3rd East and Mulberry, Bluff, Utah

RSVP today!

Though the meeting begins at 1 pm, please arrive by 11 am to ensure supporters pack the room.

Please bring your family and friends, and invite everyone you know who cares about protecting and healing the land and our collective history.

A few things you need to know:

  • The meeting begins at 1 pm, but please arrive by 11 am (or earlier if possible) to get a seat up front. Monument opponents will also arrive early.
  • Get a light blue Bears Ears t-shirt and sticker from a volunteer and wear them to make sure Bears Ears supporters are visible in the crowd.
  • There will be an opportunity to speak – please sign up at the meeting to give a short statement (1 minute or less) about why you want to see the Bears Ears protected as a national monument.

Let us know you’re coming and learn about free transportation options to this important meeting.

We now have the best opportunity we’ve had in decades to preserve southeast Utah’s matchless wildlands, to protect sacred cultural resources, to ensure that the rich history of Bears Ears remains unspoiled for future generations, and to heal the land and each other. We need your help to demonstrate overwhelming public support of a new Bears Ears National Monument—please be in Bluff on July 16!
