Renewable Energy Investment Fund

An agreement made on March 29, 2005, regarding the Springerville Generating Station Expansion Project (SGSEP) established a five-person steering committee. Its goal was to determine the use of the $5 million Renewable Energy Investment Fund to be created over the course of 5 years. In 2008, the committee decided to focus on funding renewable energy projects and established a set of criteria. Projects must:

  • Benefit Native American communities in northern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico
  • Have additional revenues committed to supporting the project
  • Be well planned and likely to be well maintained
  • Have strong support by community leaders
  • Create opportunities for training and employing local residents
  • Create opportunities for sustainable economic development
  • Strengthen existing or establish new partnerships
