I learned about the Trust through a Wildlife Society trip with Western State Colorado University. An alternative spring break week was exactly what I needed to reconnect to the outdoors. I wanted to volunteer to reinforce my ideas about the desert and conservation, and essentially walk the walk of what I stand for.
On the first introductory hike with Andrew and Montana, we wound our way through Cathedral Wash. We all stood in awe of this sub-surface playground that we got to explore. Our leaders were welcoming, approachable and so ready to tell us more about themselves, the Trust, and their relationships with the area. My first chance to volunteer was to be one of the few to fall into the cold March waters of the Colorado River. Our group has a strong affinity for this river, and the Trust was a guide to the best spring break.
With all the great voices of conservation out there, I’m not sure I have found my hero per say. But this place reminds me of the spirit of Edward Abbey and his quest to remind people of the truths of the desert and the realities of our human impacts. I think it’s important to remember these dualities and work for balance.
