Join the White Mesa Concerned Community and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe at their 10th annual rally and spiritual walk to protect the community, public health, water, air, land, culture, and sacred sites from uranium waste and other radioactive materials.
Located just north of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe’s White Mesa reservation community and just east of Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah, the Energy Fuels uranium mill is the United States’ only operating conventional uranium mill.
The mill processes uranium from mines across the Colorado Plateau as well as radioactive waste from contaminated sites across North America and the world. The mill belches smoke from its stacks and dumps radioactive waste into ponds built atop ancient burial grounds.
The White Mesa community lives in the shadow of this mill and its waste. Every day, trucks arrive hauling more uranium ore, radioactive materials to their doorstep. The community has had enough and invites supporters to join them in their protest and spiritual walk.

White Mesa Community Center
Directions: The White Mesa Community is between Bluff and Blanding, Utah. The community center is located in White Mesa, one block off Highway 191, on the west side of the road, behind the gas station. Look for a large building with “White Mesa Community Center” written on the side.
What’s the walk like?
It’s a five-mile walk along the shoulder of Highway 191 from the White Mesa Community Center to the mill turnoff. There are several short breaks along the way. A limited number of shuttle seats are available for elders and those not able to walk the whole way.
The community helps shuttle participants back to their cars. If you are among those shuttled back to the community center first, if you’re able, please consider driving back to the walk’s endpoint to help shuttle walkers back to the community center.
What should I bring?
Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. Some snacks and drinks are provided along the walk route.
Can’t make it to the event?
If you can’t make it to White Mesa to show your support in person, you can still take action to let state regulators in Salt Lake City know you care about what’s happening in White Mesa and want to see the community and the Bears Ears region protected from radioactive contamination.
