Flagstaff mayor urges protecting Grand Canyon from uranium mining

The following letter-to-the-editor from Flagstaff Mayor Sara Presler was originally published in the December 25 issue of the Arizona Republic.

The Flagstaff City Council recently passed a resolution voicing support for a moratorium on new uranium mining near Grand Canyon National Park.

Arizonans statewide echo this sentiment — bipartisan elected officials, community leaders, hunters and anglers, businessmen and women — because the value of the Grand Canyon to our tourism-dependent economy is extraordinary.

The Flagstaff City Council prudently decided to say it’s simply not worth the risk, or, as The Arizona Republic stated in a previous editorial, let’s not make this the “7th Blunder of the World.” (“We know drill,” Editorial, March 30, 2008).

Please join us in protecting this national treasure. I urge you to engage in our representative government and contact your elected officials regarding this issue.Sara Presler, Flagstaff
