Updated Jan. 12 ~ Speak out against Grand Canyon uranium mining

We need your voice to be heard opposing plans to issue new uranium mining permits near the Grand Canyon.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is issuing new air and aquifer permits for three uranium mines in the Grand Canyon’s watershed. If issued, the permits will bring those mines one step closer to opening, industrializing the region around America’s most iconic national park and putting at risk the drinking water for 25 million people in the Southwest.

Uranium mining has already exacted a deadly pollution toll in the greater Grand Canyon region including Native America. More mining would spoil adjacent wildlands and threaten to further pollute air, soil and water — including aquifers feeding the Grand Canyon’s precious seeps and springs. Neither mining corporations nor government agencies can guarantee against such pollution, and if it did happen it would be impossible to clean up.

That’s why we’re asking you to attend the public meeting in Flagstaff to tell ADEQ officials that uranium mining around the Grand Canyon isn’t worth the risk.

Meeting Time: Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, 6 p.m.: Sinagua Middle School, 3950 E. Butler Ave
