In recent weeks, lots of attention has been focused on the concern that uranium mining near the Grand Canyon could impact groundwater, including water used by the Havasupai Tribe.
But a new report by the U.S. Geological Survey and co-produced with the tribe highlights that there are other ways in which Havasupai Tribal members may be exposed to radiation.
Published Tuesday, the report, written by USGS scientist Jo Ellen Hinck and former Havasupai Councilmember Carletta Tilousi, highlights how traditional cultural practices such as hunting or the gathering of plants for ceremonies represent potential pathways of exposure for tribal members.
