Lance is from the village of Sichomovi on the Hopi reservation. Growing up, he knew the land and its cultural history were of utmost importance when it came to preservation and conservation. However, he did not come to fully understand this belief until two years after he graduated from high school. His formative years were with a national youth involvement corps, which sought to conserve and protect public lands. Having formed his ideals and interests in environmentalism, Lance went on to work with Indigenous-based programs, which aimed to involve Native youth in conservation. He also garnered the curiosity to study anthropology at Arizona State University. He is working with the Grand Canyon Trust to further elaborate on Indigenous perspectives of Öngtupqa (the Grand Canyon).
